Piano Lessons

I teach students of all ages and abilities. I have a special fondness for working with adult beginners.

Amy has been an excellent teacher for my daughter and husband. I’ve especially enjoyed the recitals which showcase a wide range of abilities.

What are my core values as a piano teacher?

First, I believe in the importance of connection with my students - not only on a musical level but also a personal one. I believe in letting my students be themselves, and I am good at working with different learning styles and personalities. Second, my aim as a teacher is to nurture a lifelong love for music, and help each student find a positive place for music in his or her life. Third, I have high standards for myself; in my own understanding of music, the piano, and the beautiful complexity that is required to make music at the piano. I have a Doctorate in Piano Performance from Northwestern University (Chicago) and have 30 years of experience as a private teacher and concert pianist, including 7 years on the music faculty of The University of Chicago and 15 years as a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s MusicNOW Ensemble. I teach piano lessons online and from my home studio in North Boulder on a beautiful Steinway B. I have served on the board of the Boulder Area Music Teachers Association and am a member of the Colorado State Music Teachers Association, Music Teachers National Association, and the National Federation of Music Clubs. My students have performed in area events like the Multiple Piano Festival and the Boulder Federation of Music Clubs Auditions. I hold several studio recitals per season. I love teaching students of all ages, from beginner to advanced. I especially enjoy working with adult students that are brand new to the piano or returning after a long hiatus.

 What styles do I teach?

I teach all styles of piano music: classical, popular, jazz, and improvisation. My students range in age from 5 to 83, and in ability level from beginner to advanced. I have been teaching piano for 30+ years, and I love it! I also love teaching music theory and ear training, which was my focus as a music faculty member at the University of Chicago for 7 years. I include music theory and ear training exercises in my piano lessons; I also have students who take music theory lessons with me. Often they are learning to improvise or play by ear, and we work on breaking down the basic elements of music - melody, harmony, rhythm - to be able to recreate the recorded music they love at the piano. Playing by ear is a skill that can be trained, and in my opinion, it’s an important part of learning how to play the piano. For more information on studying music theory with me, click here.

How do lessons work?

I offer lessons of 45 and 60 minutes. Either length of lesson works well for teens and adults. I am currently offering both in person and online lessons. Click here for more information on how online lessons work. I would love to speak with you and answer any questions you may have. Click below to contact me about rates and availability.
